Six on the brain #7

Looks like you're new here. Get all the fun of 52 Novels as it happens and subscribe by e-mail or subscribe using your favorite RSS feed reader. Might as well. Don't cost nothin.

I’m breaking a bit with the format today for this post. Yes, I’ll still give the list, but I felt it needed some set up.

It’s the time of year for goals and resolutions. Like most people, I suck at them. I set them like everyone else but the vision often overshadows the execution.

And it’s not for lack of want or trying. Before you begin you think you have some sense of what it is you can reasonably accomplish given the full twelve months. The reality is usually something different.

That’s okay, too. After all, the path along the way is its own reward.

But it’s not as if I didn’t accomplish any of my goals for 2006. Among the things I did:

  • I got the 52 in 52.
  • I wrote more than I’ve ever written. I didn’t sell anything, which was one of my goals, but that’s out of my control to some degree.
  • I started my business.

All in all, the year wasn’t half bad.

Yesterday’s post at the world’s best health and fitness blog, my online friend Lou Schuler paraphrased a quote from Charles Staley:

If you have a stated goal, but your actions are incompatible with reaching that goal, then it isn’t really a goal.

Makes perfect sense to me. How ’bout you?

Now… to this week’s Six on the brain year’s resolutions:

  1. Write two short stories a month, any length.

  2. Send out every one of  ’em. When If they’re rejected… find another market, send ’em out again.

  3. Add two new clients a month.

  4. Close new business with one existing client per month.

  5. See my chiro as soon as I determine I’m injured (instead of merely sore).

  6. Continue being inspired by my wife to be a better man and husband.

Oh yeah… there’s that reading thing, too.
